"Little Women" is about the four March sisters, and it is the story of a writer who strove for independence and achieved global success in the process. Her publisher wanted a family novel. Louisa May Alcott was skeptical, but earning her own income was important to her, so she wrote about what she knew best: herself and her sisters.
"Little Women" was published in 1868, and the second part, "Good Wives," in 1869 - together they became a bestseller. Long underestimated in Germany as young adult literature, the novel became a classic with the film adaptation "Betty and Her Sisters" (1994). And since the film adaptation by Greta Gerwig (2019), it has been celebrated for what it is: an emancipatory work. Alcott put a lot of himself into Jo, the second eldest of the four sisters, and lets her dream of a career as a writer. Although this is not easy for a woman in the second half of the 19th century, Jo and her sisters go their own way - together and yet each for themselves.
